Matt Smallwood
Urban + Eastside Area Director
msmallwood@fca.org
Matt loves FCA because it blends two of his greatest passions: Jesus and athletics. For over 26 years, Matt has coached in the Gresham and Sandy area and served the local church. He desires to see coaches realize their God-given identity and operate from that identity as they build up and encourage the youth they serve. Matt and his wife, Caroleana live in Sandy with their two children who are both active in the local FCA ministry.

Growing up, Sydney always sought Jesus, but for much of her youth, her identity was deeply rooted in her sport rather than her Savior. Soccer shaped so much of who she was... How she spent her time, how she saw myself, and often where she found her worth. When God brought her into a season where she was forced to slow down, she began growing closer to Him and learning who she was outside of the athlete she had always known herself to be.
In that season, she realized that one of the greatest gifts God had given her was not simply the ability to play a sport, but a platform through sport to glorify Him. Soccer didn't have to compete with her faith; it could become a vehicle for it.
Going into college at Multnomah University, God continued to grow in Sydney a heart for ministry and a deep love for making disciples who make disciples. She began to see how uniquely sports can create community, build relationships and open doors to share Christ. That is why she loves the mission of FCA! She wants coaches and athletes to know their identity isn't found in their performance, their position, or what happens on the field. Their identity is found in Christ, and the sport they love can become an incredible opportunity to know Him, glorify Him and help others do the same.
